Silver Strikers beat Red Lions

The central bankers took advantage of playing at home to thrash Red Lions 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Lilongwe.

With only three changes to the team that played Wizards in week 29 of the Super League, Silver started with Blessings Kameza in goals and their back four comprised of Chisomo Mpachika, Mike Robert, Mike Mtonyo, and Thoko Stambuli while Timothy Chitedze, Junior Chimodzi, Mark Fodya and captain of the day Blessings Tembo were midfield.

Green Harawa and Clement Trota were entrusted to pile pressure on the soldiers.

Red Lions were the first to register on the scoreboard through last season’s hitman Innocent Bokosi but Silver levelled the scores before halftime with a goal from Thoko Stambuli before half time.

The bankers introduced fresh legs of Binwell Katinji and Tizgowere Kumwenda in the second half to increase the stability that they had on their backyard.

Early in second half, the Lions were reduced to ten men following a red card to Bokosi for a second bookable offence and soon after s second goal emerged from Binwell Katinji. At the end of 90 minutes it was 2-1 in favour of Silver Strikers.

The win means Silver are standing fourth on the log table with 47 points and five points behind the leaders. Technical director for the side Young Chimodzi said a win is vital since his team is back in contention for the title.

“We managed to get goals, this has given us stamina for it has put us back in contention for the title and am hoping that in the next games we will still be victors,” Chimodzi said.

However assistant coach for Red Lions Pritchard Mwansa said his boys lacked composure and that the red card which came earlier affected their game.

The reds are remaining with three games to wrap up the 2016 season and they are standing on position ten on the log table with 36 points however their fellow Malawi Defence Force (MDF) team Kamuzu Barracks are on position one with 52 points.
