Three people have died after they were hit by a motor vehicle in Kasungu district.
The accident occurred on Saturday at Mbeta village along the Mzuzu-Kasungu road at around 2pm.
Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kasungu Police Harry Namwaza said the accident involved a Toyota Hilux Double Cabin registration number BU 6327 which was being driven by Mustafa Bamusi.
He said Bamusi, who was with one passenger, was coming from Mzimba going to Lilongwe and upon arrival at Mbeta village soon after passing Matchaya Prison he wanted to overtake 13 year-old Frank Banet, a cyclist going in the same direction as his car. But in the process, the vehicle hit the cyclist and Bamusi lost control of it.
The car swerved to the extreme nearside of the road where it hit two pedestrians who were walking along the edge of the road. The cyclist and the two pedestrians died on the spot.
The two pedestrians have been identified as Sopani Gondwe and Francis Chisale, both aged 29, who hailed from Kankong’otho village, Traditional Authority Chikumayembe in Dedza. Banet the cyclist hailed from Mkwaila village, Traditional Authority Kachindamoto in Dedza. Meanwhile, 52 year-old Mustafa Bamusi who hails from Kankong’otho Traditional Authority Chikulameyembe in Rumphi has been arrested and will appear before court soon.
