‘Malawi police officer’ arrested

Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 27-year old man for impersonating a Malawi police officer. The man, Aaron AJasi, was arrested on Wednesday at Kawale in the city by police officers who were patrolling the area.

According to a police statement, the officers saw Ajasi wearing a Malawi Police uniform but was not displaying the demeanor of a police officer thus they arrested him. James will appear in court to answer charges of impersonation contrary to section 389 of the penal code.

The suspect Aaron Ajasi hails from Samuka Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mulumbe in Zomba district.

In a related development, Police in Mchinji have arrested three people who claimed to be Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) officers and stole K180,000 from customers.

Mchinji Police spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino identified the three as Patrick Brown, 26, Felix Jacob Gwagwala, 28, and Shamil Banda, 25.

He said the trio who live in Area 36 in Lilongwe were arrested on Monday at Kamwendo trading centre following a tip-off from a patriot.

Lubrino said all the suspects were found wearing garments such as overalls and boots while one among them had a fake Escom identity card.
