Police nets 47 people in Karonga

Police in Karonga district have arrested 47 people in the district who are suspected to have committed different crimes.

According to Constable George Mulewa who is deputy public relations officer for Karonga,  as one way of tightening security Karonga Police arrested 23 people when they conducted a two-day joint operation with officials from Immigration and forestry departments.

“The operation targeted illegal immigrants and people who are taking part in deforestation and other offences. Due to this operation 22 people have been arrested for illegal entry and one for being found in possession of Forest products,” said Mulewa.

The suspects will appear in court very soon to answer charges of illegal entry and being found in possession of forest products.

In a related development, Police at Chilumba Police Post in Karonga have arrested 24 people during a sweeping exercise.

Mulewa told Malawi24 that on 30 June, 2016 Chilumba police post conducted a sweeping exercise and 24 people were arrested for being found in possession of prohibited drugs, selling liquor without license, and being found in possession of property suspected to be stolen.

Mulewa further said that four of the suspects are also wanted by other police stations for different cases. The suspects will appear in court soon to answer charges laid against them.

Meanwhile Karonga police have thanked people who take part in informing them of any illegal and criminal activities taking place in the district and have asked others to do the same to make Karonga a crime free district.
