FIFA will from next month sponsor a football tournament for girls in secondary schools in Blantyre as part of its youth development programmes.
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) vice president James Mwenda confirmed the development.
Mwenda who is also Fam technical subcommittee chair said FIFA has already made a commitment towards the sponsorship.
He however did not disclose the actual sponsorship package but described it as significant.
“I can confirm that FIFA has agreed to sponsor girls football in secondary schools, as a pilot project will start with 12 schools around Blantyre,” he said.
He added that apart from funding for the tournament, FIFA will also provide equipment such as balls, boots, and uniforms.
According to Mwenda, the association is currently working with district education managers for Blantyre to select schools that will be part of the league.
He also said that they are working on logistics in order to determine how the tournament will be administered.
The tournament will run for six to eight months and Mwenda said the governing body hopes the tournament will help promote football development in the country.
