Malawi Police officers in the lower shire district of Nsanje have confirmed that they have cancelled a search operation for an elderly woman who drowned in Shire River.
On Friday, the woman was among eight passengers in a canoe that capsized on Shire River after it was attacked by crocodiles in the lower shire area.
However, Nsanje police Criminal Investigation Officer John Thembenawo has confirmed that they have called off the operation whose goal was to find the body of Lucy Kalonga.
Thembenawo further said other victims are currently in good health as they were rescued by a well-wisher. The eight passengers were on their way to Mozambique to check their gardens.
Shire River is one of the rivers with high numbers of crocodiles and cases of people being attacked are not rare.
The deceased hailed from the area of Chief Malemia, Traditional Authority Chataika in Nsanje district.
