A young mother in Machinga district has been arrested for being suspected to have poisoned her two year-old child to death.
The 18 year-old woman is understood to have killed the child in anger after she was chastised for practising prostitution.
According to the eastern region’s police spokesperson, sergeant Otilia Kumanga, the suspect has been identified as Eliza Chaona.
Kumanga said the young woman became furious after her parents advised her to stop prostitution.
Later, the young mother stormed out of the house but she came back after some time and then locked herself in her room together with her two year-old baby. While in the room, the woman gave her child poisoned milk.
For some reason, the suspect’s mother forced herself into the room and she was surprised to see the baby struggling for life.
The baby was later taken to Machinga hospital where it was pronounced dead.
The suspect is expected to appear before the court of law where she will answer charges of murder and if found guilty she will get life imprisonment.
Chaona comes from Mwana mayi village in the area of Traditonal Authority Mkunguma in Machinga district.
