Newly appointed minister of information and civic education Patricia Kaliati has said she will be available to work with journalists at all times.

Speaking to one of the local media houses on Monday, Kaliati said that she understands she is a straight talker but urged journalists to work together with her toward a common goal.

“Let’s show our humility and make sure we work together for the local people, above all we need to understand that we have one President Peter Mutharika,” said Kaliati.

Kaliati’s remarks follows a plea by the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi chapter that it hopes the new minister will ensure that freedom of expression is respected in the country.

MISA Malawi chairperson Thom Khanje said freedom of expression is fundamental in the principles of democracy of a sovereign state like Malawi. “Freedom of expression has been a challenge in the country as people are being arrested for criticising government but we expect the newly appointed minister to see that freedom of expression is respected,” Khanje explained.

Kaliati replaced Jappie Mhango as government spokesperson following the recent cabinet reshuffle which saw Allan Chiyembekeza who was the Minister of agriculture, irrigation and water development being axed.
