Malawi Police officers are on red alert after it has been established that criminals are now targeting government offices across the country.

This follows a series of robberies at government offices located in the country’s districts.

Two weeks ago, a group of armed robbers stole from Thyolo district education offices, before going to Phalombe district education where they committed a similar crime.

After a couple of days, robbers also stole from Mangochi District Commissioner’s (DC) offices and went away with property worth millions.

Confirming the robbery in Mangochi,   spokesperson for the police in the district Rodrick Mayida said the robbers broke into 10 offices, including the DC’s office and stole K473,000 cash, K24,000 worth of airtime vouchers, five laptops, one laptop bag and Master’s and Bachelor’s degree certificates in Public Administration belonging to the District Commissioner Jack Nguluwe as well as four promotion letters.

Maida said the robbers shot in the air several times to scare the community before stealing a Toyota Hilux twin cab registration 018 MG 033 belonging to the district’s youth department.

The vehicle was later found along Katema road near Nansenga, a few kilometres away from Mangochi district.

Malawi police have since vowed to investigate the robberies.
