Mutharika, Virginia Palmer meet over coup reports

Following government’s demand for people such as Virginia Palmer who were accused of plotting a coup against President Peter Mutharika to prove their innocence, the Malawi leader and the United States of America (USA) ambassador met for the first time.

The two met in Lilongwe on Friday when Mutharika had a discussion with US Senators, two weeks after the coup plot was first reported.

Speaking after the meeting, Palmer said the Senators came to Malawi to appreciate the relationship between the two countries.

“The USA Government is committed to work with Malawi Government in several areas such as, education, health, agriculture among others for the beneficial of its people and we are looking at how we can expand the relationship so that a lot of Malawians can benefit,” said Palmer.

She added that her government is looking forward to see that the support it is giving the country goes a long way in assisting the needy and families affected by HIV/Aids.

“The USA Government is committed to work with Malawi Government in several areas such as, education, health, agriculture among others for the beneficial of its people and we are looking at how we can expand the relationship so that a lot of Malawians can benefit,” said Palmer.

In his remarks, senior US Senator James Inhofe from Oklahoma said he was glad to meet the president face to face and have a talk on how the two countries could work on development issues.

On his part, Mutharika said he was very grateful for the support the US Government is rendering to the country.

“The USA Government has helped and contributed to the development of this country. It is helping us in the fight against HIV/Aids, maternal health, as well as relief aid to the people affected by floods in 2014/15 rainy season.

“Due to this situation, the country has been hit with food shortage in some of the districts which were affected by floods and the USA Government has been there to help us solve the problems,” said Mutharika.
