Residents of Mitundu area in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe are still in fear a day after a 21-year-old Yohane Chambu hacked his 52 year-old father Sainani Chambu to death in cold blood before he unceasingly beat his mother.
Chambu is currently in police custody.
Confirming the incident to Malawi News Agency (Mana), Lilongwe Police Station Public Relations Officer Kingsley Dandaula said the suspect was well known for smoking Indian hemp popularly known as chamba.
“On Thursday the suspect went to his parents’ house and beat up his mother before cutting her arm with a panga knife. He also picked up a child and threw it away. Later on he proceeded to the garden where his father was working and beat him up, took out his eyes and cut off his head,” said Dandaula.
He said the suspect is expected to answer charges of murder contrary to section 209 of the Penal Code.
Both the deceased and the suspect hail from Fisi village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiseka in Lilongwe.
