Police in Machinga district have arrested a fence attendant at Liwonde National Park for being found with ammunitions.
Machinga police publicist Davie Sulumba identified the suspect as Peter Samson Somanje, 36, of Makaluka ll in the area of traditional authority Chikowi in Zomba.
He said the suspect on 9 November last year forgot a bag in a minibus he boarded from Ntaja to Liwonde. The bag contained a bible, shoes, and 29 live ammunitions of a mark 4 riffle
The driver of the minibus surrendered the bag to Liwonde police station.
“After our investigations we arrested Somanje for being the one who left the bag in the minibus and the suspect admitted to have stolen the ammunitions at Liwonde National park where he was working,” said Sulumba.
Police have since advised all those who use firearms and ammunitions to take proper care of the weapons in order to reduce cases of armed robbery in the country.
Somanje will soon appear in court to answer charges of theft by public servant in accordance with section 286 of penal code.
