Soccer fans in the country have got all the reasons to smile following reports that the Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development (FISD) is set to rescue the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) by sponsoring the Fam Cup.
The cup was until last week being sponsored by Standard Bank of Malawi.
According to information reaching Malawi24, the Fam president Walter Nyamilandu is set to announce FISD as the new sponsors on Monday at Chiwembe Technical Centre during a press briefing organised by the association.
Fisd used to sponsor Wizards FC but pulled out after Peter Mponda refused to relocate his side to Lilongwe.
However, it is not known as to how many years the organisation will sponsor the cup and the amount of money that will be pumped in.
Malawi24 has also been told by reliable sources that Fam has also struck a deal with a certain company to sponsor a yet to be established cup.
If all goes well, soccer fanatics will watch their beloved teams competing in more than four trophies this season.
Standard Bank pulled out last week after bankrolling the cup for seven years citing the current economic woes being experienced in the country.

Please invest your money in many irrigation schemes not football. Irrigation is not well developed in this country for FISD to start sponsoring football.

FISD sponsoring football at a time when irrigated farming is still underdeveloped and the country is suffering from hunger!? Somebody should think twice and be serious. This country can’t develop when NGOs that are supposed to initiate socio-economic development lose focus like this. May be their name is misleading, I need to read their mission statement and grasp their vision first. But I don’t think my thinking is wayward anyway.
We need serious NGOs that have the country’s development at heart and not these disorganised and disoriented NGOs that just want to make a name out of trivial issues. I used to fault Major 1 Shepherd Bushiri on a number of issues koma pano ndaona kuti biggie ameneyu ndi deal. He has money to sponsor all the foootball trophies in Malawi but he has chosen to distribute maize to the poor in remote areas. Fisd please allocate these funds to intended purpose and not cashgating with WNY our waters are fast running into mozambique when they couldve been a substitute for scarce rainwater. Irrigation is your core function and you must practice that, soon well expose you to your sponsors, am concerned bcoz ur using FAM which is a public entity surving on malawians tax.
