Barely a day after Malawi’s former ruling Peoples Party (PP) leader Joyce Banda appointed Uladi Mussa as Acting President, the new president has appointed Kamlepo Kalua as third vice president of the party.

A development backfires at Christopher Mzomera Ngwira dream of having former vice president Khumbo Kachali lead the party.

After observing the vacuum in the party, Northern region provincial chairperson for the party, Mzomera Ngwira, endorsed Khumbo Kachali as an interim president of the party.

According to former provincial chairperson, the party needed someone who can take the duties of the party’s president like holding rallies and give strength to party members.

“But I am doing that because I love the party, those who are trashing what I said wants to been seen holy so that they can save their positions in the party, gradually the party is sinking,” said Mzomera.

In a statement sent to Malawi24 signed by PP publicity secretary Ken Msonda dated 4th January 2016, the appointment of Kalua is after consulting Joyce Banda.

“The Acting President of the PP Hon Uladi Mussa MP is pleased to announce that after consultations, the founder and President of the Party Joyce Banda has appointed Hon. Kamlepo Kalua, MP. 3rd Vice Presidential of the Party from the northern region. The appointment on Hon Kamlepo Kalua is with immediate effect,” reads the statement.

Banda left Malawi after she lost 2014 Tripartite General Elections to Peter Mutharika.

She has defended her absence from the country as due to political prosecution by the young Mutharika Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led government.

Meanwhile commentators have said the appointed of Mussa signifies a continued absence of Banda from the country.

  25. why cant joyce banda call for a convention and let her supporters to choose their own leaders and not this method of choosing them by herself. this shows lack of intra-party democracy and makes the party a personal property which may even continue to divide the party as the pipo being appointed are in the positions not on a majority basis but on favours.

  35. Kalua is one of the very few leaders to be respected not neccessarilly because of such an appointment but rather for always standing by the truth as well as voicing out for the voiceless poor Malawians. Kamulepo and the Consumers Association of Malawi’s boss ali mu class lawo lawo!!
