Comic revelations emerging from the former ruling People’s Party (PP) indicate that despite being on a self-imposed exile in South Africa, Malawi ex-president Joyce Banda remains the party leader because she controls it over the Internet.

A member of the party’s national executive committee (NEC) told Malawi24 on Wednesday that everything happening within the party is still under her full control and she claims to be the life president of the party.

He further claimed that the recent firing of Christopher Mzomera Ngwira was fully influenced by her because she still believes that Ngwira wanted to underrate her authority by endorsing Khumbo Kachali to succeed her as party president.

“She sent an email to the vice president Uladi Mussa advising him to get rid of Ngwira because she thinks that Ngwira was a threat to her presidency.

“Before any decision is passed in the party, they wait from her email and proper communication. She told us that she is the life president of the party,” said the official who opted for anonymity. Confirming the development, Uladi Mussa told Malawi24 that indeed the former head of state remains the president of PP saying in everything they consult her. “She told us to fire Ngwira via email because he broke some of our party’s rules and regulations. He irked our president so much with his suggestion to endorse Khumbo Kachali. Banda remains our president,” he said.

When asked on when they expect their president to come back to Malawi, Mussa said that will depend on how ready government is to assure her security because currently they are still not confident on whether their president will be safe at home.

Meanwhile, Malawi24 understand that there are divisions in the party over the firing of Ngwira because other people are supporting him while others are trashing the move saying it lacks proper justifications.
