A 17 year old boy with albinism has been hospitalized at Holy Family Mission Hospital after being severely hacked by unknown assailants.
Phalombe Police Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector Augustus Nkhwazi confirmed the incident. According to the Police Publicist, the victim, identified as Alfred Chikalo of Mnasi Village T/A Mkhumba in Phalombe, was attacked on the night of Sunday 29th November, 2015 around 11 PM while he was fast asleep and was rescued by well-wishers when he cried for help.
“Alfred Chikalo was fast asleep in his house alone when unknown thugs broke into the house with panga knives and started hacking him. The victim cried out for help and well wishers rushed to rescue him from the attackers.
“It was upon seeing the people who were alarmed by the cries of the victim that the thugs started running away,” said Nkhwazi.
Police rushed to the scene when alerted and they found the victim in a pool of blood and before rushing with him to Phalombe Health Centre for treatment.
Meanwhile, Chikalo has been referred to Holly Family Mission Hospital where he is receiving treatment.
Nkhwazi said: “The victim sustained deep stab wounds in the head, both arms and on the upper part of the left leg.”
According to the victims’ grandmother, Lydia Petulo, the victim was putting up in a separate house (gowelo) when the incident happened.
Meanwhile, Police have instituted an investigation into the matter and a case of unlawful wounding has been opened.
The motive behind the attack is yet to be established.
