Two people have died while others are battling for their lives after a car they were traveling in overturned near Mkhula Bridge in Malawi’s Nkhotakota district.
A witness told our reporter on Sunday that the accident happened after the driver identified as Alick Foster (32) failed to control the car after its front tire had burst.
According to the witness, all passengers on board were farmers belonging to Kadadwa cane growers association who were going to Salima to open bank accounts. Police said of the severely wounded; five sustained multiple injuries while one is in critical condition at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.
They said the car which overturned was a fifteen tonne truck with the registration number BL 740.
“83 passengers were on board and we can currently establish that two have died and 20 are in critical condition,” police said.
According to police, the two that died are Cheston Chirwa,73 from Paulosi village T/A Kafuzira and Hendrix Moyo,52 from Mwamdima village in Nkhotakota,”
Police have sounded an advice for drivers to consider servicing their cars before any journey to avoid the recurrence of such fates.
