…considering to rehire Timpunza
Malawi24 can reveal that President Peter Mutharika is in a dilemma over the person whom he should appoint to replace embattled Gerald Viola as his Press Secretary.
According to a source in State House, Mutharika has been having a headache on how he should manage his appointments. This is after he was advised by his trusted aide Ben Phiri and Director of Information Bright Molande that he should fire Viola or having a loose tongue.
“The choices that were submitted all have some reservations and this is giving the President some tough time,” said the source.
The source further disclosed that the headache was coming after considering that Mutharika has already made three changes for the post in a year.
At first Mutharika appointed former Malawi News editor Frederick Ndala to be his press secretary but he fired him after he had duped journalists in allowances, Ndala was replaced by Bingu’s favourite Timpunza Mwansambo but he was fired for drawing two salaries.
Mutharika’s latest appointment was DPP die hard Gerald Viola, it has been Viola’s lack of wit that made him speak unpalatable things which has made Mutharika consider sacking him.
It has been alleged that MBC journalist Mzati Nkolokosa has been put up for consideration. However, the source said that it was Nkolokosa’s bad relationship with the media that was making Mutharika have second thoughts on the appointment.
Some quarters have rumoured that Mutharika will have the University of Malawi lecturer Bright Molande as his press officer.
“The lack of practice in the media is his only setback,” said the source.
Meanwhile in his latest public appearance Mutharika used fired Press Officer Timpunza Mwansambo to manage the ceremony.
When asked if the President was considering to rehire Mansambo, our source dismissed it.
“It is the discretion of the President to choose who will manage the ceremony, he can choose anybody and that is why Timpunza (Mwansambo) was there,” he said.
