Transformation Alliance pressure group acting chairperson Moses Kunkuyu has told President Peter Mutharika to stop joking on issues concerning curbing corruption in this country.
The former Minister of Information has told Mutharika that corruption is fought using actions not mere speeches on the podium.
“You don’t fight corruption by standing on the podium and say you don’t like corruption, you fight it through actions,” he told a local radio.
He further claimed that though at most times there have been tangible evidence that a ruling party member or a minister has been involved in corrupt practices, the president does not react and instead he defends them.
“We have evidence where we can see allegation that minister so was involved in corruption or party follower so was involved in this.
“But the president go on and say there is no corrupt minister [in his cabinet],” he concluded.
George Chaponda who is a senior member of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party is yet to be arrested, months after the Anti-Corruption Bureau found huge sums of cash in his house.
Chaponda was also implicated in the maize purchase scandal while he was Agriculture Minister and for some time Mutharika defended him before later firing him from his position due to pressure from the public and donors.
Last month Mutharika told a gathering at Chonde ground in Thyolo during elevation ceremony of Ngolongoliwa from Senior Chief to Paramount that there are no seven corrupt ministers in his cabinet as claimed by some people.
Vice chairperson for Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament who is also legislator for Rumphi East constituency Kamlepo Kalua has been accusing the president of protecting cabinet ministers suspected of being involved in a K236 billion cashgate.
A recent Afrobarometer report shows that over 70 percent of Malawians believe that corruption is rampant in the country.
