A mentally ill man on Sunday killed a seven month-old child identified as Joseph George at a hospital in Mangochi district, Malawi24 can report.
The madman was being taken to his ward at the hospital but he managed to overpower his guardians and went to the children’s ward where he strangled the child.
Police have identified the mentally ill man as Sanileki Yaseen, 23. Mangochi Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Amina Daudi told Malawi24 that the deceased was an orphan and was being taken care by Open Arms lnfant Home, an NGO based at Madelco in Mangochi district.
According to Daudi, on 12 December the infant fell sick and was admitted to Mangochi District Hospital.
“On Sunday 18 December, the suspect was brought to the hospital by his relatives and was also admitted but instead of going to his ward he proceeded to the children’s ward.”
“Violently he overpowered the doctors and guardians and he strangled the child to death,” Daudi said.
Postmortem conducted at Mangochi District Hospital revealed that the death was due to manual strangulation.
According to Daudi, the suspect was arrested but since he is mentally ill he has been taken to Zomba Mental Hospital for further treatment. Joseph hailed from Katema village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi while his killer is from Nkawa village, Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi district.
Charge him with murder.
