The Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima) reopens next month, the university council says.

The college was sealed on 19 July 2016 after the students were involved in running battles with the Police following government decision to hike fees with about 100%.

In the process of the protests, they turned violent and engaged in cat and mouse chase with Police Officers.

Chanco.
Opens next month.

Today the students blocked the way for a convoy that was carrying the US Second lady Jill Biden who is on a three day visit in the country, and it was after this that the management announced the closure of the college.

But having met the Chancellor of the University, President Peter Mutharika, a directive was made that the fees be slashed with just K50 000.

The cut will now see generic students paying K350,000 from K400,000 while mature students at College of Medicine (Com) are to be paying K1,000,000 from K1,400,000. Their colleagues in the health sector from Kamuzu College of Nursing (KCN) will pay K700,000 from K1,000,000.

Students from other colleges, the Polytechnic and KCN held protests in the same course after the Chanco closure.

But the University Council has now announced that Chanco will open on 12 September 2016.

Meanwhile, students at the Polytechnic have indicated they will not accept the cut.
