As up to eight million Malawians are facing hunger due to drought and floods which hit the country during the last growing season, President Peter Mutharika on Thursday met donors at Kamuzu Palace where they discussed ways on how they should implement the country’s food insecurity response plan.
Mutharika said that the meeting was necessary as it gave coordinated implementation plan for various efforts aimed at assisting people affected by hunger in the country.
“I decided to bring every Ministry, Department and Agency that plays a key role in our response to hunger,” said Mutharika.
Malawi need to raise $300 million in order to implement the hunger response plan. Some of the donors have already pledged to provide funds and are also implementing food security projects in affected areas.
The Malawi leader commended the donors for providing solutions on food shortage and development challenges in the country.
The two sides agreed to open up their communication channels and to always share information on the quantities of food aid to be brought into the country.
They also agreed to share information on the logistical arrangements involved in bringing and distributing food assistance to people affected by hunger across the country and on the long-term strategies of how to end hunger in the country.
The development partners who attended the meeting included World Bank Resident Representative Laura Kullenberg, Irish Ambassador to Malawi Aine Hearns, Ambassador of Norway Kikkan Haugen, British High Commissioner Michael Nevin, EU Ambassador Marchel Germann and US Ambassador Virginia Palmer.
The Malawi delegation also included Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima, Ministers of Finance Goodall Gondwe, Foreign Affairs Francis Kasaila, Trade and Industry Joseph Mwanamvekha, Agriculture and Food Security George Chaponda and Chief Executive Officers of Admarc and the National Food Reserv

Or we need donors so that you steal from our taxes. It seems like the donors are promoting cashgate.
If all the money rooted through cashgate by current & former adiministrators is paid back, will we need donors?
