Malawi Congress Party President Lazarus Chakwera who also doubles as leader of opposition in Parliament has urged fellow Parliamentarians not to relent in their pursuit of the money set aside for the 2016/2017 fiscal year.
His comments have come at a time that Members of Parliament (MPs) have approved a national budget that has been pegged at over K1 trillion, the biggest in years, with most of it being set aside to bail Malawians out of a pending hunger.
Speaking to the local press, Chakwera said tracking the way the money is used will help Malawians to have good services during the financial year.
“We will be doing what we are supposed to do to Malawians, we will try to push for implementation of whatever was mentioned in the budget,” said Chakwera.
Chakwera added that transparency and accountability are to be achieved as government will be taken to task to provide details on the funds spent.
The opposition leader expressed concern that it will be “unfair” to taxpayers, who contribute a large share to the expenditures, to see the budget not benefiting them due to lack of monitoring.
During budget presentation, Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe said Malawians are to contribute more to the national budget as donors have opted to stop direct support to the budget following the abuse of resources at Capital Hill commonly known as the Cashgate whose known chief architect Oswald Lutepo was arrested. Lutepo then fingered former President Joyce Banda in the saga.
