Blantyre Synod Health and Development Commission on Thursday donated 450 bags of maize to residents of Sakata in Malawi’s old capital, Zomba.
The aid has so far been distributed to needy people in the district especially the elderly, pregnant women, and children.
Blantyre Synod’s health and development director Lindilinabe Faith Timazinyane said the donation is an ongoing activity and has targeted 26 families so as to alleviate hunger in the district.
She said: “We will be distributing food up to the month of February, 2016 and each family will be receiving a bag.”
Commenting on the issue, one of the beneficiaries, Wyson Unda said the donation will enable him to survive in the coming days.
“I am very thankful to Blantyre Synod. We have been surviving on boiled mangoes as supper,” he said.
According to Zomba District Council, the aid has come in time as residents suffered with hunger due to inadequate food.
Zomba is one of the districts that were hit by heavy rains that affected most parts of the country earlier this year.
