Renowned commentator Stanley Onjezani Kenani has applauded Malawi President Peter Mutharika for landing multi million dollar deals with China.
Kenani has however asked Peter Mutharika to come open on the money he has sourced from Chinese government if whether its aid or loan.
The Malawi leader held discussions in China with officials from the Ministry of Commerce, EXIM Bank of China and China Gezhouba Group Company Limited. Following the discussions the Chinese government approved the implementation various projects in Malawi.
But Kenani added that despite remarkable project the Chinese government is about to embark on, investors are scared of unreliable electricity power supply.
“It’s not clear whether this is aid or a loan – but whatever the case it is a good move, and the Malawi Government should be applauded for the initiative. One thing that scares investors is the lack of reliable electricity supply.
“Besides, the power supply we have is not adequate for major industrial production. The Kam’mwamba project might change that. As for the Chileka Airport, well, its face-lifting is long overdue,” wrote Kenani on his Facebook.
According to Mutharika, the Chinese Government approved for implementation of 300 Megawatt Kam’mwamba Coal Fired Power Plant. The project is aimed at increasing the power generating capacity of Malawi to meet the ever increasing demand. The project cost is estimated at US $667,232,814.
Whereas with the E Government (National Identity) Project, the Chinese Government approved the Fibre Back-bone component of the project, which will lay the fibre optic cables to increase internet connectivity. The entire project is estimated to cost US$50 million.
However, before implementation of rehabilitating Chileka International Airport, the Malawi government is supposed to redesign the project, conduct feasibility study and an Environmental Impact Assessment. The project has been estimated at US$285,430,000.00.

Background
In 2012 China Gezhouba Group said it plans to build a $500 million, 1,000 megawatt thermal plant in Malawi.[1][2]
In 2013 an MoU was signed between the Malawi Government and the China Gezhouba Group Company for a power station of up to 1000 MW, but the first phase would be 300 MW. The plant will use about 400,000 tonnes of coal annually from Moatize in Mozambique. The coal will be transported by rail that is being constructed by Vale.[3][4]
In May 2014 the Export & Import (Exim) Bank of the People’s Republic of China granted a loan for the 300 MW project. The plant is to be built over 24 months at a cost of about $667-million.[5] The China Ex-Im Bank said it was still considering funding the additional 700 MW.[6]
In April 2015 it was reported that construction would begin once the US$600 million from the China Exim Bank was approved. The Malawi ministry plans to have the power plant operational by 2018.[7] In July 2015 it was reported that China Railways No. 3 Engineering Group would finance the power station and rail line, but no details are given.[8]
