The Midima First Grade Magistrate Court has convicted and sentenced George M’mangitsa, 47, to eight years and five months imprisonment with hard labor for having sexual relations with a four-year-old girl.
The court heard that on November 15, 2024, the victim’s mother noticed her daughter was having trouble walking and had a strange discharge, prompting her to question the child.
Upon questioning, the child revealed she had been lured by a man promising sweets, leading to the arrest of M’mangitsa. Despite pleading not guilty, the state presented three witnesses, including the victim’s mother and aunt, and a medical report from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital confirming sexual assault.
In mitigation, M’mangitsa requested a lighter sentence, citing his responsibility for seven children. However, Prosecutor Sub Inspector Annie Kamwendo argued for a stiffer sentence to deter potential offenders.
Magistrate Lameck Mkwapatira agreed with the prosecution, handing down the eight-year sentence to George M’mangitsa who hails from Foliji village Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo district.
