MEC support staff arrested for stealing electoral equipment

Malawi

Police in Kasungu are keeping in custody a 23-year-old Biometric Voter Registration Kit (BVRK) operator for stealing registration equipment.

The operator stole a power bank worth K35,000.

Kasungu Police Public Relations Officer Harry Namwaza confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect stole the power bank from a colleague’s BVRK machine.

Namwaza said investigations are currently underway and the suspect is expected to appear before court on December 17, 2018.

According to the Kasungu Police Publicist, the suspect is expected to answer theft charges.

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the commission has since dismissed the BVRK operator following the arrest.

Electoral equipment also went missing in Mzuzu during a mass voter registration exercise which ended a month ago.

Kasungu district was among some districts covered in the first phase of voter verification exercise in readiness to the 2019 tripartite elections.
