A Mother’s Day announcement from President Peter Mutharika carried on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) has gone viral on social media following an error.
A picture showing the announcement that said “Happy Mother’s Day ‘massage from President Peter Mutharika” has been shared widely on social media.
Mutharika’s message was delivered Saturday ahead of Mother’s Day on Sunday.
A State House press release says Mutharika believes that mothers are pillars of society as they build families and nurture children to become productive citizens.
“Above all, the President believes that mothers are special people.His Excellency the President is therefore calling upon all Malawians to respect our mothers, cherish and celebrate the love and care they give us,” says the statement.
Malawi celebrates Mother’s Day at a time the international community comes together to commemorate World Rural Women’s Day.
The World Rural Women’s Day was launched in 1995 during the 4th UN World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. The day is commemorated annually on October 15.
The statement says the day is an important occasion to Malawi since more than 80 percent of the country’s population lives in rural areas and a larger section of that population is women.
“These are the women who till our land, feed the nation and send millions of children to school.
“The World Rural Women’s Day and Mothers’ Day offer us an immense opportunity to reflect, recognize and appreciate the role women play in developing this nation.The President would like to remind all Malawians that violence against women is an evil we must all guard against,” says the statement.
Mutharika has since called upon all men and organizations to join him in championing the right of women.
