Former Super League side Karonga United are the Northern Regions champions of the Fisd challenge cup after beating Rumphi medicals 3 -1 in a game that took place at Katoto ground in Mzuzu.
Gule Mwaisope scored after 4 minutes and then completed his brace in the 36th minute to give Karonga a 2-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Karonga’s Antony Mfune added another one after receiving a good cross from the left to make it 3-0.
In the 85th minute, Medicals pulled one back from the spot after a foul by Jacob Tembo fouled in the box.
The game ended 3-1 to Karonga.
For winning the regional stage, Karonga United received 1 million Kwacha and a cup.
They will face Nyasa Big Bullets in round of 16 of the national phase of the cup.
In an interview, Davie Muyombe who is coach for Karonga thanked his boys for the win.
On facing Bullets, Muyombe said meeting Super League team is not new to them.
“Let me thank my players for the job well done although we were expecting more goals all in all we are through on top of that we are regional champions.
“Our next game is against Nyasa Big Bullets but we are not afraid because we are good as a team,” said Muyombe.
Coach for Medical Patrick Phiri said they lost the game because players were not concetrating.
He however expressed anger after learning that they would not receive money for finishing as runners up.
According to Phiri, at first they heard that even the second team will receive money only to learn on Saturday that there is nothing for the runners up.
Masiya Nyasulu is the Northern Region Football Association General secretary and he said the cup was successful.
In another Fisd CUp game, Katowo fc from Rumphi are the district Fisd champions after beating Baka fc of Karonga 4-3 on penalties.
Katowo also received 1million kwacha for winning the cup.
