The Southern Region Chess league will this weekend hold its first ever Under 12 Chess tournament.
The tournament will take place on Saturday, 14 October at the Royal Heritage Primary School in Naperi, Blantyre.
Dubbed “Elim Cooking Oil Under 12 Chess Tournament”, the event is being bankrolled by Elim General Distributors to the tune of K100,000 kwacha.
According to Regional Chess Coordinator for Schools Magret Ngugama, the tournament is aimed at developing the sport from the grassroots.
“We want to drill the kids in chess from a tender age, so that they can master it as they grow,” said Ngugama.
Winners of the individual tournament will receive chess sets, books, medals and school materials.
Participants will be asked to pay a registration fee of K1,000. Registration period closes on Friday 13 October.
