Six nabbed over minibus drivers’ riots in Mzuzu

Just like in Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre, business was brought to a standstill in Mzuzu city on Saturday as minibus drivers and conductors opted to riot in protest of new penalties for contravening laws on the roads.

The ugly scenes in Mzuzu on Saturday morning led to the arrest of six people.

MzuzuNorthern Region Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said the six are in custody for their role in the fracas.

“Some people wanted to take advantage of the situation and we found that they are not minibus drivers and conductors, these are pure criminals,” said Kalaya.

Meanwhile minibuses are to be back on the roads of Mzuzu today as disclosed by authorities in the city.

The riots by drivers and conductors in Malawi have witnessed millions of property being destroyed.

In Blantyre on Friday vehicles were smashed and three police units set on fire as the situation turned violent.
