Mtambo rapped: human rights activist faulted for faulting demos

Timothy Mtambo

The hypocrisy of human rights activist, Timothy Mtambo, has been called out.

Upon making comments on the demonstrations that the religious body in the country had on Tuesday, 6 March, 2016, Mtambo said that the Church was wasting time protesting on useless things. The useless things he was referring to is abortion and homosexuality.

“If I was to pose and ask my religious leaders as to what are the major problems Malawi is facing right now, what would they tell me? For sure the issues they are spending their valued energy and time are not part of Malawi’s problems,” posted Mtambo on Facebook.

Mtambo went on to ridicule the religious body for ignoring critical issues in Malawi such as corruption, the shortage of drugs in hospitals and electricity and water shortages. He called them hypocrites for dwelling on small issues while the nation burns.

His comments, however, were not well embraced by some Malawians who felt that Mtambo was playing double standards for disagreeing with people’s right to protest. Others felt that Mtambo was irked by the protests because they were attacking his source of food.

“Funny,” one person remarked. “You are well known for demonstrating and today you are mad because others are taking a similar action. Is it because you know that you will not benefit anything from the demos?”

“Because it is other people who have demonstrated then you are angry? You have been in the forefront of organising demonstrations yet there has been no change in our status due to your demonstrations. You are a worse hypocrite,” another called out the CHRR boss.

“Timothy, I honestly never expected something like this to come from someone like you. People don’t demonstrate because they want to put foot on the table. A demonstration is an expression of oneself,” another offered a free lecture.

However Mtambo came to his defence claiming that he was not stopping anyone from demonstrating but was rather faulting the reasons behind the demos.
