Former Malawi Defence Force (MDF) commander Henry Odillo will today appear in court in Lilongwe on accusations of misusing taxpayer’s money.
Odillo who was arrested in 2015 together with his former Deputy Lt Colonel Clement Kafuwa are accused of misusing millions of kwacha through a contract to supply military equipment to Thuso Investments which the state claims were not delivered.
Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Deputy Director Reyneck Matemba has confirmed this to the press.
On May 28 2016, Odillo was expected to take plea on the charges leveled against him but the case failed and was adjourned to today.
Odilo and his co-accused are answering three charges namely: abuse of public office contrary to Section 25(b) (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act; negligence by public officers in preserving money or any other property contrary to Section 284(1) of the Penal Code; and, money laundering contrary to Section (1) (d) of the Money Laundering, Proceeds of Serious Crimes and Terrorist Financing Act.
Odillo was fired as MDF Commander by President Peter Mutharika in June 2014 and was replaced with Ignasio Maulana who was also fired by the same president.
