Mangochi Police’s fairytale run in the Carlsberg Cup continued after the lower league side beat Premiere Bet Wizards 3-2 on penalties in a Carlsberg Cup quarterfinal match played at MDC stadium in Blantyre on Sunday afternoon.

After 90 minutes, the game ended in a goalless draw but Peter Mponda’s side had dominated much of the possession and came closer on several occasions though the Mangochi police goalminder was too good to concede.

Come the spot kicks, the Mangochi cops stunned the Chilomoni based side after beating them 3-2 to book a semifinal date with Mighty Be Forward Wanderers later this month.

The Malawi second tier league side started the campaign on a brighter note having registered more than 4 wins before adding the Chilomoni based side to their casualty list.

This will be the second time in Malawi for a second tier league side to reach this far in the Carlsberg Cup with the first team being Zomba United in 2014 who were beaten 2 nil by Nyasa Big Bullets in the final of the Carlsberg cup.

In other quarterfinal games, at Balaka stadium Lucky Malata helped Silver Strikers to reach the semifinals of the competition after scoring in a 1-0 win over beat Red Lions.

The Bankers will meet either Nyasa Big Bullets or Mafco fc who are yet to play their quarterfinal match on security grounds.

On Saturday, the Nomads beat Prison United 1 nil at Balaka Stadium with Peter Wadabwa heading in the Nomads’ lone goal.
