Nkhotakota First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced a 22 year-old man to three years in jail for stealing K150,000 from his employer.

The court through public prosecutor sergeant Mughogho of Nkhotakota police heard that in the month of May, the convict, Dickson Magalasi was employed by Kinney Spekesi who is a manager of Wayankha Enterprise.

Magalasi was given the duty of buying farm inputs in the village.

“On 14 May 2016 the convict collected money amounting to K150, 000 for the inputs and after some days he reported to his boss that he needed extra money since the money he had collected earlier had been used up,” Mughogho told the court.

This time around he collected K250, 000. On 30th May he also asked for more money to supplement to the cash he had and his boss sent him another K250, 000 to take the total amount of money he had received to K650, 000.

Spekesi took the convict to Mwansambo police unit where the case file of theft by servant was opened.

When passing the sentence, Magistrate Chilowetsa of Nkhotakota First Grade Magistrate Court said the offence of theft by servant is a serious one that attracts a maximum penalty of five years with hard labour.

In mitigation, Magalasi asked the court to be lenient since he had an expectant wife and three siblings who depend on him.

When passing judgement, Chilowetsa convicted and sentenced Malagasi to three years imprisonment with hard labour as a lesson to others.

The convict hails from Chazama Village, Senior Chief Mwansambo in Nkhotakota district.

In a related development, the same court sentenced Shaibu Umali to 18 months with hard labour for house breaking and Gelesomu Malire to two years in prison for robbery.

Umali, 22, hails from Kalimanjira Village in the area of Senior Chief Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota district while Malire, 26, hails from Kampini Village in the area of senior Chief Kasakula in Ntchisi.
