Stop reporting on albino attacks – media told

As the government, individuals and other organizations in the country are still looking for the best way to deal with abductions and killings of people with albinism, local media houses have been advised to stop reporting on the deaths of people with albinism.

This is according to the Malawi Health Equity Network (MEHN) executive director George Jobe who said the blackout on the attacks will help in reducing the attacks.

Jobe said the daily reporting of the attacks and killings is also another factor which is fuelling the attacks.

He added that there is no market on earth where human bones or other body parts are being sold and people countrywide need to remove the feeling that these people are money.

But he argued that the feeling can’t be removed in people’s minds when they continue hearing reports of albino attacks and killings on a daily basis.

“As a concerned citizen of this country, I feel like we need to learn from the recent death of an albino in Ntcheu where the man was killed at his garden, this is not good. The main lesson here is that we need to quit spreading news of such killings.”

“We have talked a lot on the deaths of these people. I think they are these messages which are fuelling these deaths because whenever a person hears of such killings, what comes in his/her mind is that an albino is money, we better stop reporting such cases,” said Jobe.
