Elhadj: is visiting Malawi

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) general secretary Elhadj As Sy has jetted into Malawi to assess the hunger situation in the country.

The visit comes weeks after authorities disclosed that half of the population will be food insecure following the persistent dry spells that affected most of parts of the country.

As Sy will visit Mwanza district to assess the hunger situation and later he is to have an audience with vice president Saulos Chilima before flying to Zimbabwe.

Last month President Peter Mutharika declared Malawi a state of national disaster and appealed to well-wishers to help people who are facing hunger.

Meanwhile, Red Cross Malawi has been geared to raise over K200 million to help the hunger victims in the country.
