Malawi, SA to resolve migration issues

Malawi and South Africa have agreed to resolve migration issues within a period of three months through an interactive ministerial meeting to be held in South Africa.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation George Chaponda said on Thursday last week during the Malawi-South Africa 3rd Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) held in Lilongwe that there are many Malawians as well as other citizens from Africa who have been detained at Lindera Camp as illegal immigrants.

According to Chaponda, the two governments have agreed to provide a platform where migration issues will be resolved in order to facilitate the release of the detainees so that they can return to their country within a period of three months.

Speaking to the press, South Africa’s Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Luwellyn Landers said South Africa is open to further bilateral talks at ministerial level regarding issues on migration.

He said the two governments are committed to find a lasting solution on illegal immigrants who are currently at Lindera camp and others who will soon be detained at the camp.

He assured that the ministerial meeting will be held within the agreed period and his government will fully sponsor it.

According to reports, there are more than 1,000 Malawians detained at Lindera camp.

However, South Africa stopped deporting illegal immigrants detained at Lindera.

Malawians who have spent more than six months in Lindera camp are allowed to go back into South African communities and are given 17 day stays in the country.

I don’t think there will be a concrete decesion to curb migration unless and only unless Malawi government invest in the youth, Wi have the most college dropouts students than South Africa itself. University fees is a mountain to climb bursary is for the lucky few. South Africa bound hence becomes the last alternatives for the youth.
    To tackle migration invite the most affected to voice their concerns and ways than meeting the socalled Leaders who will eat drink wine and write nothing at the end
    Hiking a passport fee won’t solve any problem plz.
