Newborn baby dies in road accident

A one day-old Malawian boy has died while his mother and the driver sustained serious injuries after a minibus they were traveling in overturned in Nkhotakota district.

Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector Williams Kaponda confirmed the accident with Malawi24 and said the accident occurred at Mtumbula village in the district.

road accident“In the morning of February 3, 2016, the driver Mike Chawinga, 32, driving a minibus registration ZA 680 Nissan Vanette was   traveling from Dwangwa heading towards Nkhotakota Boma. When he reached at Mtumbula village, he failed to negotiate a sharp bend corner as he was exchanging direction with another vehicle. This resulted to the motor vehicle overturning several times before stopping,” explained Kaponda.

Kaponda further said the victims were rushed to Nkhotakota district hospital but unfortunately the baby died while receiving treatment. However, the mother and the driver are still admitted at the hospital.

Police have identified the mother of the deceased as Bertha Kampitire, 23, and the driver as Mike Chawinga, 32, of Pendwe and Chulu villages respectively, all from Traditional Authority (T/A) Mphonde in Nkhotakota district.

Since January this year, Nkhotakota has lost three people in  the six accidents that have occurred in the district.
