Malawi Journalists under Nyika media club have donated about 500Kgs of maize flour to inmates at Mzuzu Prison as one way of easing problems of food shortage currently rocking the facility.
In his comment following the gesture, club president Deogratias M’mana said it pleased the journalists to come in and help after observing the poor conditions inmates are swimming through at the facility.
He emphasized that being a journalist does not end only with writing articles but it also involves taking part in social responsibilities.
“We thought that only reporting about these issues was not enough but as journalists we have to come in and do something,” he said.
However, he expressed concerns at how inmates are overcrowding at the facility thus he urged government to consider responding urgently on the issue.
On his part, officer in charge for the prison Hellings Nyalubwe hailed the journalists for their good gesture saying the donation will go a long way in helping ease problems of food at the facility.
“The population of inmates is increasing but government hasn’t increased the funding as a result we are operating in a very challenging situation. Let me take this opportunity to thank you journalists for your kindness,” he said.
The donation was made possible through contributions from Nyika media club members, Times group, and Gift of the givers organization.
