DPP denies hacking MEC system

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which rose to power after the elections in May last year, has denied claims that it rigged the elections by hacking a Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) system.

An information technology expert, Christopher Ligomeka, claims that the ruling party hired him to hack MEC computer system used to count votes during the 2014 Tripartite Elections.

However, in an interview with Malawi24, DPP spokesperson Francis Kasaila said the claims made by Ligomeka are not true and the party does not recognise his name.

“As DPP we don’t have such name in the party and we even don’t know him. If the system was hacked, then it should be MEC telling us what happened. This is an issue that requires to be dealt with a security institution.

“MEC have never told us that their system was breached. It should be MEC taking the responsibility of investigating and getting to the truth of the matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, MEC has refused that its system encountered any problems related to hacking. MEC’s director of media and public relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, said there was no problem with counting of the votes and the only challenge was on transmission as the system could not accept the results because some presiding officers had merged polling streams.

According to Mwafulirwa, the system was designed not to accept any result showing more than 800 voters per stream. But, since some presiding officers had merged the streams, it resulted in more than 800 voters per stream.

“The returning officers were asked to bring all the results to the tally centre where they were entered into the systems. Mwafulirwa also said there was nothing sinister with the DPP having its own tally centre as it was the same with all parties.”

“There is no prohibition for a party to have a centre where it will tally all the results sent by its monitors from the centres. It was not only DPP. Several parties had their own centres where they were tallying results sent by their monitors,” said Mwafulirwa.

The leader of the DPP in the presidential elections obtained 36.4 percent of the vote and 7.5 million people were eligible to vote in the elections, which were described as Malawi’s closest-fought polls in 20 years.

So many are graduates from different universities now, yet some of them had passed through Likasa. DPP lead govt since it took over power last year has implemented bad and unpopular policies bcoz it did not make a serious and competitive campaign as compared to MCP, UDF and PP during last year campaign. imagine Peter himself visited zomba only twice during the campaign period and yet zomba was one of the districts that gave Peter high votes. what am saying is Peter didnt do a serious campaign to know what was on ground hence unpopular decisions his government is making and perhaps justifies the the claim that anabera mavote.
