The Ntchisi First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 27-year-old Malawian traditional doctor to 10 years imprisonment with hard labor for raping a 35-year-old woman who visited him to seek medicine to end her barrenness.
The court heard that the convict, Willard Jabesi, on September 16 this year at M’duwa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chilooko in Ntchisi had unlawful carnal knowledge of a female, Emlida Mwale, without her consent.
The court further heard that the woman was looking for medicine to heal her bureness and she used to visit the local traditional doctor, Willard Jabesi Njovu.
Then on the particular day the woman went to the convict’s local hospital and upon arrivals she was told to enter and also told to remove her pant so that the traditional doctor should x-ray her using his minor grass while siting down.
The court also heard that the woman was also told to lay down and it was this time the woman saw the convict taking three bottles of medicine and came closer to the woman and hold him since she was already down.
It was also revealed in court that the convict then raped the woman and told her not to cry or call for help and once she do that, she will be bewitched.
After the convict raped the woman, he took the medicine and gave them to the woman. The woman reported the matter to her husband after two days and was advised to report the matter to police.
The convict pleaded guilty to the charge of rape contrary to Section 133 of the Penal Code.
Passing judgement, First Grade Magistrate Dorothy Kalua said the offence is serious in nature and the offender deserve a stiff sentence to send as a warning to other traditional doctors with similar intentions. She therefore sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour.
Jabesi comes from Mingu Village whereas the victim is from Kamphandira Village, all from the area of Traditional Authority Chilooko in Ntchisi.
