The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) will today officially announce names of successful candidates for the association’s December 12 polls in Salima.
People will be much interested to find out whether Wilkins Mijiga and Willy Yabwanya Phiri, who are vying for the top job at Chiwembe, have been given a go ahead to stand for the Fa presidency or not.
The incumbent FAM president Walter Nyamilandu is automatically in the race as he has been at the helm of the association for the past 12 years. According to the Fa’s statuses, successful candidates will be those that have been in football administration for more than 5 years.
Yabwanya Phiri is claiming to have been in the football administration for more than said years and is adamant that he will get the not to fight Nyamilandu for the top position.
“I am not new in the football world in Malawi. I am the one sponsoring Karonga United and used to play for Chilumba Secondary School during my playing days and I am confident of getting a go ahead to stand for the presidency,” he told the local media.
Mijiga, who was nominated by the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) is also claiming that he has been in the football administration before and is adamant of getting a nod to fight the incumbent in December.
“I was the main organiser for the Flames’s 2010 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) fundraising commitee and I was also involved in leading Big Bullets sometime back. This means that I am qualified to fight Nyamilandu,” said Mijiga.
The fate of the duo plus other aspiring candidates for various positions at the country’s soccer governing body lies in the hands of the electoral body which is being headed by judge Sunduzwayo Madise.
When the Fa announces the successful candidates, it will allow the unsuccessful candidates to appeal the decision within the next seven days.
If the duo are unsuccessful, Nyamilandu will go unopposed but if they are given a nod, it will be a three race horse.
The incumbent was nominated by 7 of the 9 associations affiliated to the association. Southern Region Football Association (SRFA), Northern Region Football Association (NRFA), Central Region Football Association (CRFA), Malawi Beach Soccer, Coaches Association of Malawi, Womens Football Commitee and Youth Development Commitee all nominated Nyamilandu, with the National Referees Commitee (NRC) and Sulom nominating Yabwanya Phiri and Mijiga respectively
