Former Malawi President Joyce Banda has told the Peter Mutharika led government to stop being obsessed with her and her family.

Joyce Banda
Banda: Worried with Mutharika.

Banda was responding to the recent report by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) which implicated one of her sons Geoffrey Kachale Banda in a plot to bring down the current Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led government.

In a statement released to the press, Banda who remains in her ‘self-imposed exile’ said the allegations are based on unproven facts.

“I have personally endured untold political persecution and abuse in the past year at the hands of DPP government. As a mother, I would not sit back and look at some misguided government institutions and individuals transfer that misery on to my children.”

“Therefore, I am challenging both the NIB and the government to substantiate these allegations and many allegations against me and my family,” reads the statement.

She also added that her son, who is an entrepreneur and resides outside the country, has no interest in politics.

Malawi President Peter Mutharika
Mutharika: Criticized.

“I know him very well and has never expressed any interest in politics and any attempts to link him to politics are as futile as they are ridiculous,” continued the statement.

She also predicted that if the current regime is not monitored, the nation will return to dictatorship.

“I wish to call upon the civil society, the clergy and the diplomatic community in Malawi to keep a watchful eye on the DPP government to deter any attempts to return to dictatorship through disrespect for human rights and bad governance,” said Banda in the statement.

However, there was no response from government as we went to press.

Banda’s son together with Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president and leader of opposition Lazarus Chakwera and other civil society leaders were accused by the NIB of receiving millions of Kwacha from donors to sabotage the Mutharika led administration.
