Eleven learners at a government owned primary school primary school in Lilongwe have been injured after their classroom fell on them.
The pupils injured have been treated as outpatients at Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe.
The incident happened at M’buka Local Education Authority (LEA) School today when a makeshift classroom – with a roof supported by poles – fell on the students while they were in class.
The Nation reported that the children from the community surrounding the school had been shaking the poles and today they gave in.
“According to the school’s head teacher, Jefferson Tsamba, the makeshift classroom fell on them after it was weakened by some children from the community who have been shaking the all ‘pillar and roof’ structure
“The school has a half perimeter fence making one side open and difficult to control trespassers leading to people coming in and out of the school willy nilly,” reports the Nation.
The incident has happened when President Peter Mutharika has come under fire for pledging to construct two stadiums for privately owned clubs.
Malawians have condemned Mutharika for prioritizing the stadiums at a time when many schools and hospitals in the country are using dilapidated buildings and temporary structures.
Blame not children. Unfinished infrastructure is not uncommon in public institutions. Government is the culprit
