A road accident has claimed the life of a Tanzanian truck driver in Mzimba District.
Mzuzu Police deputy publicist Cecilia Mfune has identified the deceased as Vincent Omay, 29, who was driving motor vehicle registration number T109 Scania truck.
According to Mfune, Omay was travelling from Lilongwe towards Mzuzu on his way to Dares-Salam and the truck had bags of soya beans and one passenger (assistant driver) on board.
“Upon reaching Elamuleni Trading Centre he lost control of the vehicle and failed to negotiate a bend as the truck overturned to the left side of the road,” she said.
Following the impact, the truck driver sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mzuzu Central Hospital while the assistant driver had minor injuries.
Meanwhile, police have advised drivers to avoid overspeeding and to observe all road traffic signs in order to avoid accidents.
