Mutharika urges MHRC to fight tax evasion, money laundering

President Peter Mutharika has urged Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) to fight against tax evasion and money laundering which he said restrict Malawians from enjoying their full economic rights.

Speaking at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre when he met with commissioners of the MHRC, Mutharika said evading tax reduces government’s power to provide social services to its people.

According to President Mutharika, the MHRC should extend its work to investigating whether corporations, industries, and individuals are complying with their tax obligations.

“Let me also request that you extend your work to investigating whether people comply with their tax obligations, because tax evasion is leading to government failing to meet its social demands and in turn deny people of their right to social amenities,” he said.

The Malawi leader also urged the commission to investigate the tobacco industry which he said is filled with stories of abuse and low prices.

“I have met with tobacco buyers more than 20 times, here in Malawi and outside the country too. They promise to change but they don’t. Our farmers are not getting returns for their hard work. We need to change this,’’ he acknowledged.

Mutharika applauded security agencies such as the police for ensuring that rights of all people and property are safeguarded.

“I want to thank our police and all various stakeholders who are fighting for us to protect the right to life and dignity of persons with albinism. We have registered progress but we still need to remain vigilant,” he said.

  17. What About Institutions Mandated To Fight These Are They Going To Be Closed ? Thank The President For Comfessing That These Institutions Are Waste Of Tax Payers Money . For Instance He Asked PAC To Probe Into Late Brothers Wealth In My Knowledge This Work Is Suppose To Be Done By ACB But Thank The President That He Has Realised That ACB Has No Capacity To Do The Job So , He Better Close These Offices In Question Because I Guess Another Day When The President Retires As You All Know Our Politics Will Be Another CASHGATE

  23. I personally agree with the Malawi leader that MHRC should extend their work to start investigating issues of tax evasion and money laundering. We (CSO,Chiefs, opposition and church leaders and every citizen) need to work hard if we to combat this malpractices because thieves take advantages of the gaps that are between these stakeholders. Some of them are our workmates, friends,people we voted them into power but we keep silent hence weakening the development of our country. The president alone can not be the police, ACB,Judge, a minister of all ministries and the army, it is the responsibility to help him governing this country realizing that together we can make Malawi a good country to live.The moment we fight each other or fight the leader, thieves in various offices clap hands knowing that we will be wasting our time pointing at each other or the president while they are walking away with our taxes freely out there. Let us avoid to be used as tools for politicians who want achieve their goals instead we should work together in developing our country for our own benefit and for the children that are coming.Those who have evidence about corrupt practices are encouraged to submit them to the relevant authorities so that the perpetrators are punished. My appeal to our President is that you should accommodate the advice from individuals and groups who want to advance your vision of transforming Malawi.I hope you will not disappoint Malawians simply by keeping goats and hyenas in your cabinet but remove them once the inquires are over. May the Almighty God bless Malawi and you the President.
