Mutharika uses UN platform to plead for poor Malawians case

Malawi President Peter Mutharika on Wednesday went on the biggest of political stages to ask for support on the hunger crisis in the country.

Mutharika sought the assistance while addressing the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.

Over 6.5 million people in Malawi this year require food assistance due to low food production during the last growing season.

The Malawi leader told the audience that his government is currently doing all it can to provide food for the hunger victims.

“However, we need and seek external support of our cooperating partners and multilateral institutions within and outside the UN systems. We still need US$246 million for this cause,” Mutharika said.

He added that if Malawi can get the money, the country will be able to end the hunger crisis.

Mutharika also told the dignitaries that Africa and the rest of the world is suffering from dehumanizing poverty, the pain of hunger, disgraceful inequalities and unjustifiable gender imbalances.

He added that most of the tragedies and challenges being experienced, are man-made and the solutions lie in people’s hands.

  6. apart from natural disaster ,sometimes hunger is the result of regional/district leaders who are not competent enough to supervise efficiency in food management , provision of better agricultural education to their people and that problem of consuming or selling seeds to be planted next season. Magufuri has warned that any region which will declare food shortage, Regional commissioner will have to go.

  25. Until when should we remain beggars till when till when? We have natural resources in Malawi. But the problem is we don’t want to share equally. That is the reason why they demand us to allow homosexuals,lebsians,sex works, satanic the list goes on. If u are a beggar u wil do whatever it takes to please the donor.
