Traditional leaders in Malawi have been drilled on their role on fight against Climate change.
Local leaders in Salima district have been urged to take a leading role in the fight against climate change in the country.
District forestry officer for Salima Adam Jason made the appeal on the sidelines of a community sensitisation meeting in Traditional Authority Pemba in the district.
Jason said as custodians of culture, chiefs must play a key role in the fight against climate change.
“Charcoal does not come from towns but here in our villages. If we can come up with better control measures at grassroots, l can assure you we will address this issue once and for all,” he explained.
In his remarks, Group Village Head Kachitsa urged forestry authorities in the district to partner the communities to control charcoal burning.
“It is true we are the ones who will suffer if nothing is done now to control this malpractice,” he said.
The chief added that people can already see the impact such acts have brought in their day to day lives.
The sensitisation meeting was sponsored by Cooperazione Internazionale (Coopi), a multi-sectoral non-governmental organisation operating in the district.

70% of Malawians can afford to buy electricity but the government offers only 40% houses country wide on top it black outs .
The people have no choice they buy Firewood and Charcoal
