Notorious criminal gets 7 years

A principal offender who had been terrorising Mzuzu city and was found with stolen items worth K10 million has started getting what he deserves courtesy of police and the courts.

The convict, 24 year-old Moses Ngwira, who so far has other fifteen new cases to answer in court has been sentenced to seven years for burglary and theft contrary to sections 309 and 271 of the Penal Code respectively.

The court heard that Ngwira, during the night of 21-22 April 2016 at Luwinga location in the city of Mzuzu, Ngwira broke into the house of Chimwemwe Nanguwo and made away with LG plasma screen valued at K250,000.

CourtAssistant Superintendent Msowoya told the court that after conducting investigations, detectives at Luwinga Police Unit recovered the item in Karonga.  The one who was found in possession of the plasma said he bought it from Ngwira.

Police arrested Ngwira and he pleaded guilty to both charges levelled against him.

After all was said and done, Principal Resident Magistrate Gladys Gondwe sentenced the him to seven years and two years for burglary and theft respectively. Both counts will run concurrently.

Police say the convict is also the man behind the recent spate of burglaries in the city and his arrest led to recovery of household items worth ten million Kwacha.

Moses Ngwira hails from Chilira village in the area of traditional authority Mtwalo in Mzimba district.

Meanwhile one of the thief’s victims Nanguwo is all smiles following the recovery of his plasma screen by the police and the subsequent sentencing of the convict.
